Table Prayers

I’ve been working on a writing project this month, a prayer resource on issues of food security. I’ve been writing and reading and praying so much, I’ve decided to make this week’s post a previously-written set of intercessions on coming to God’s table.

God of abundance, we come to you in prayer.
We pray for those who count calories instead of blessings.
We pray for those whose abundance means they cannot imagine being food insecure.
We pray for those who do prefer convenience over taste and ease over nutrition.
We pray for those whose waste more food than they consume.
We pray for those who cannot remember, and those who have never known, the feeling of a full stomach.
We pray for those who fill their bellies with non-food items like tree bark or dirt to stave off the hunger pains.
We pray for those whose bodies reject, through allergy or intolerance, the foods meant to provide nourishment.
We pray for those who do not know how to prepare healthy foods.
We pray for those whose employment requires them to deny food to the hungry.
We pray for those who corrupt food for profit.
We pray for those who would aim to control the food system, thereby controlling the people.
We pray for those who modify food to unnatural states.
We pray for those who teach nutrition and healthy food habits.
We pray for those whose work seeks to increase food security for the most vulnerable.
We pray for those who recognize that food security is not only a distant problem, and who strive to help their neighbor wherever they may be.
We pray for those who understand working for food security as an expression of their baptismal vows.
We pray for those who come to the table to pray, to gather, to share.
Loving God, hear our prayer.
